I'm a sports medicine doc and see lots of these. I would say that there is nothing that can be done in PT that will get a meniscus tear to heal. When you think about what is required to get a tear to heal surgically (must be a peripheral tear, sutured with a fibrin clot created in the tear, and four weeks of immobilization or non-weightbearing after surgery), you can see why these don't heal on their own. No externally-applied device (eg, ultrasound), and no exercise will cause it to heal.
Get a second opinion, but go to a doctor, preferably one who specializes in a non-operative approach (non-operative sports medicine), as they will be aware of all options. I tell my patients in this situation that by taking a non-operative course, they do run the risk of extending their tear and ultimately needing a wider resection of their meniscus, which increase the risk of subsequent osteoarthritis. However, some meniscus tears do become asymptomatic, and you often can't tell which ones will and which ones won't. Best of luck.
