Determining whether to buy new snow tires...

How does one determine when to buy new snow tires? I have a 2001 9-3 Viggen, and I purchased the Gislaved snow tire set from the dealer in 2002. So, this year would be the fifth year with these snow tires. I seem to remember that last year the tires weren't as confidence-inspiring as they seemed to be in the first year. However, I cannot be sure whether this is my memory acting up. I do believe there is still quite a bit of tread left, but is there any other indication? I'm leaning toward buying new snows, but this could cost me $800 or so (to get Nokian Hakka 4, for instance).
