No mention of what the problem is, so I'm guessing you are interested in new. Whirlpool owns Maytag, Roper, most Kenmore..... They have a good agitator in their toploaders that is easier on clothes, and a bit more efficient than your Maytag.
The front loaders make sense if you are in a water sensitive position. They are expensive so you may want to stick with a good toploader for half the cost.
I've been told that new appliances are now designed to last 8yrs, not 20 like your vintage Maytag. So average that $1000 frontloader over 8 not 20yrs, and it won't look so reasonable. Don't understand why they are building them less durable, but it seems to be a factor.
I'm gonna try keeping my Maytag going for another 15yrs....
