If you want to print at home, check out the small printers by HP and Epson that are designed to do 4 x 6 prints. You buy a pack of ink and paper and it works out to about 25-30 cents per print. However, the Epson inks are more durable, especially to abuse, than the HP inks.
A small part of my business is evaluating this kind of thing so I compared the sample images from each machine that were available at Best Buy. I got each image wet (just a few drops of water), then rubbed it. The HP ink peeled up with only light pressure. The Epson smeared a little but was much more stable. The Epson also was less prone to cracking if folded. Both were on the papers of the respective companies. Using the papers and inks made by the printer manufacturer is important to get the best results.
The Kodak prints (which use a process called dye sublimation) I've tortured the same way hold up better than either HP or Epson.
Lab tests by these companies (I've been in their labs) show that the inkjet prints last longer than traditional photo prints in terms of color fastness, provided they are under glass. Ditto for Kodak. Otherwise they are about the same.
But real world it probably doesn't matter all that much.
I think the Kodak process is probably the best for home use, but cost and efficiency-wise I think it's better and ultimately less expensive to upload the photos to a service like those of WalMart and others and get your prints that way. While not quite as convenient, Kodak Gallery, Snapfish and other online services are good alternatives. These use a variety of print technologies.
