I did a LOT of research on diamonds before buying and ultimately found that Cut was by far the most important thing to look for in a stone. A well-cut stone really sparkles and can offset any slight inclusions and/or yellow hues. When buying, I aimed to find an "eye clean" stone - one with imperfections that were only visible under magnification, or detectable only by diamond experts.
The stone I ended up buying was a 1.05 ct., SI2 clarity, H color, ideal cut round brilliant. I purposefully bought a stone that fluoresced a little bit, as blue fluorescence in a diamond can counteract yellows to an extent. The stone was set in a platinum setting and with the naked eye you can't see much (if any) difference between it and much more expensive flawless stones.
I bought the stone online through Whiteflash and paid by bank wire since they offered a significant discount for wire transactions. Whiteflash was an excellent experience and I'd recommend them. I chose the setting at a local jeweler and they mounted the stone.
