The newer generation of quiet, energy efficient whole house fans typically move about 1000 CFM, which can replace the entire volume of air in a 1500 square foot home in just 12 minutes. Used overnight, a small whole house fan like the HV-1000 from Tamarack Technologies can lower the interior temperature of the home to nearly the same temperature as the outside air, typically about 65-degrees here in Seattle. The whole house fan is expensive, costing around $550 plus an additional $200 for installation. (Check the internet for distributors offering Tamarock products at a discount.)
A whole house fan can only cool the home if the outside air temperature is lower than the inside air temperature. Therefore, during our occasional 90+ degree heat waves when the overnight temperature only dips to 70-degrees, a whole house fan will only provide minimal cooling.
