The thing I disagree with is assertion D--that if the tires were just as good as OEM, then the automakers would use them--but they don't because if liability concerns.
The OEM tires are cheap. There's no doubt in my mind that Michelin gives away the MXV4. There's also no doubt in my mind that the MXV4 is such a lousy tire that there have been accidents that have occurred that would not have occurred otherwise.
Michelin can give away tires because of its brand and reputation. People assume that the OEM tire must be good, otherwise it wouldn't be OEM...so once those tires are used up they are more likely to buy the OEM tire again over any other.
So Michelin makes its money off the MXV4 by selling it to consumers the 2nd time round. For such a crappy tire, the MXV4 is extremely expensive...for just a few dollars more, you can get the world class Pilot Exalto A/S.
Clearly the profit margins on each tire are very different. And because the Pilot Exalto is inherently a more expensive tire, it'll never be an OEM tire, because it's simply too expensive for Michelin to give away. (The MXV4 does have one advantage--it's low rolling resistance inflate EPA fuel mileage. The automaker can claim the good fuel mileage with the OEM tire.)
So in summary, automakers would use Cooper, Kelly, or what have you if the price were right.
