This was in the Seattle Times the other day and it seems like it is somewhat related to your question:
"Andrew Gibb, an energy-planning analyst with Seattle City Light, answered questions from readers Wednesday about ways to lower utility bills and greenhouse-gas emissions. Here's an excerpt from the online question-and-answer session.
Q: Will turning the thermostat off during the night save energy? Or does the energy needed to bring the house back to a comfortable temperature the next morning counteract any savings?
A: Turn the heat down at night! It takes a lot of energy to keep a home warm when you are gone, because the rate of heat loss is high through walls, ceiling, air leaks, etc. As your home cools, the rate of heat loss is reduced dramatically, so all night long your home uses less energy. You will have to boost the heat in the morning, but all that night your furnace will be able to rest easy. In a general way, we often figure about 1 percent reduction on your heat bill for every degree reduced at night. So going from 70 to 60 degrees might save you 10 percent on your heat bill."
