Working as independent consultant?

I'm considering venturing into the world of independent contracting (IT stuff... database, marketing analysis) and was looking for some insight from fellow saabnetters.
If I work directly for a client, I can get a great hourly rate (say $70). Of course, I'm drumming up the business myself, so there's legwork in finding the work. But if I contract via a large company like a Spherion or Matrix who is essentially helping that same client fill a position, the rate is horrible (say $35). What is a typical percentage cut of an hourly rate these big firms get for placing someone? It can't be 50% can it? I'm in the wrong business if it is!
