I think it was one of the Baron Rothschilds, that I made a hell of a lot of money be selling too soon.... and he made a LOT.
I am retooling my portfolio now, and bringing some of those profits home inside my RRSP (similar to a 401k) here in Canada.
I will now reflect on some of the advice by Stephen Jarislowsky, in his recent book, The Investment Zoo, and remind myself that, "Investors today are surrounded by predators, much like in a jungle. Governments are possibly the biggest predators of all. But stockbrockers, advisors, underwriters, executives, bankers, and organized labour, not to mention lawyers and accountants, all take a slice out of investors's assets. Caveat emptor (let the buyer beware) is always good advice."
He tends to take a longer term view. And he certainly didn't need the money from the book to make himself rich!
Really good stocks hold their value, and he points out that the management team and their habits can tell you a lot about the whole company. The market will turn, because nothing lasts forever. It takes time to plan a condo project, but only one signature on a piece of paper from a lender to cancel the whole shot, leaving others to hold a bag.
I watch that PBS evening show Nightly Business Report with Paul and Suzie occasionally, and it is helping me prepare for an entry into US equities, now that the Canadian dollar is reaching close to par.
Cheer, and best of luck in the market.
