"....and you'll almost always get where you need to go."
Yes, but some of us are more interested in how the drive is than just getting there. ;)
"I just saw a review of the new Suby B9 Tribeca, with more power and an improved AWD system. It goes good, but gets less mileage on the highway than my wife's 9-5 wagon does in local driving."
Which has more to do with it being a huge, heavy and high drag SUV with an inefficient engine than it has to do with AWD. If you want to talk about AWD cars consuming more fuel than FWD you need to compare two cars of the same model with the same engine and transmission. Lets try a comparison with a car that also uses a Haldex AWD system:
Audi A4 3.2FSI multitronic: combined mileage: 24MPG
Audi A4 3.2FSI multitronic Quattro: combined mileage: 22MPG
That's a difference of whopping 2 MPG. Worth having superior traction and handling? Definitely.
Is the new 9-3 XWD introduced to sell more cars? Of course it is! That's what Saab needs to do. But it also doesn't mean that some of us don't enjoy a quick car with superior traction. It's not really a question of what you need, but what you want. Otherwise we could just as well be driving in some bland Toyota. I know that every time I've upgraded my 9000 it only lasts for a short while until I want to upgrade the performance again.
