Even if you pay it late, they will charge you.... I received a parking ticket at my son's law school graduation ceremony in May. The ticket said i had 20 days to pay or appeal. Since I was parked in a lot that was approved for commencement ceremony observers (I just parked there too early) I immediately appealed. The appeal notice said it would take 4 to 6 weeks for the formal appeal decision to be reached.
Meanwhile, the calendar kept clicking along. After 30 days the school contacted the registered owner of the vehicle (the rental company) seeking payment - conviently forgetting the ball was now in their court.
The rental company provided the school with my name and address, then charged me $15 for this service.
The school also sent me a late notice and increased the fine by $5 for being late!
After 5-1/2 weeks the school decided I was right and no parking fine was due.
I have contacted the rental company (they were polite and understanding), requested the appropriate letters from the school documenting all of the above, sent the documents to the rental company, and I am now waiting for a credit of $15 to be applied to my charge card.
A parking ticket with a rental car can become a huge pain.
