Yes, in the rockland area, visit OHTM as mentioned, especially in conjuction with an event. There is also a train in rockland that goes back and forth to brunswick and is a great way to see the coast in this area.
If you've got 2+ days and are in shape, visit baxter state park and hike kahtadin. It's a whole day affair (starting early) to get up and down the mountain, but is very worth it. If you're an english/history/nature fan, you might read Thoreau's "The Maine Woods" prior to the visit.
Do go off route-1 a bit. If you can spend a couple days at a lake AND the ocean, that would top it off nicely. LLBean, Maine Sport, and problably others organize training/adventures as well if you are interested in kayaking or other outdoor activities but don't know where to go. There are many websites where such enthusiasts share their routes.
