I've never believed in extended oil change intervals- in EVERY case. I think some engines can tolerate longer OCIs....it's just that the SAAB I4 isn't one of them. And I think well enough of this engine that I'm willing to use full synthetic (Mobil 1 0W-40) and change every 5K.
When we leased our first 9-5, (a 2001 9-5 Linear wagon( the dealer put a SAAB semi-synthetic in it at the first service. I asked questions, and they said that the Mobil 1 was "available," if I wanted to pay for it, obviously. I found out what they charged for the M1, did some research, and from that point on, I provided the oil for the warranty service...the intermediate 5K OCs I did myself. With our second lease (an '04 (9-5 Arc wagon) I just took over and did all the OCs myself. We've now kissed off SFSC and bought a CPO car, and it will see nothing but the M1....
