Any technical writers here?

Are there any technical writers on TSN? The reason I ask is because it is a field I am interested in breaking into but don't know where to start in regard to training and would appreciate any advice from those already in the industry.
A little background on myself, I'm 27 years old and I've been working pretty low paying entry-level office jobs since graduating with a B.A. in Communication five years ago. During a recent job search I came across a few technical writer positions and it is a career that interests me and that I think I could excel in if I could get trained. I'm a very good writer and mechanically inclined, like many of you I enjoy wrenching on my old Saabs, always with a Bentley or factory manual close by.
I've looked at some online courses and perused some book titles on Amazon, other than that I don't know how to pursue this. None of the local schools where I live (Louisville, KY) appear to offer any continuing education courses in tech writing. So what is my best option? Get some books and read up on it? Any advice would be appreciated!
