The mitochondria in your cells that provide the cells with energy were originally a separate bacteria, which moved into eukaryotes a loooong time ago. Mitochondria have their own separate DNA from your cell's DNA.
Furthermore, the human genome harbors the gene sequences of an enormous number of viruses that have accumulated over millions of years.
Those gut bacteria do most of the heavy lifting for digestion and provide you with nutrients. The first innoculation comes at birth through the mouth from bacteria lurking around the birth canal. Bacteria are frequently very tiny (1 micron in length), smaller than red blood cells at 6-8 micron. With 5-10 lbs of bacteria packed in your gut the numbers may very well be greater than the total number of the rest of your cells.
If you took away all your bacteria you wouldn't survive (unable to digest much of anything beyond glucose and water), and if you removed all of the viral gene sequences from your genome you probably wouldn't even be human anymore.
