This is almost 40 year old info, but when I was stationed in Italy (68-70), vehicles registered to US military had to be "denationalized". IIRC we would drive over the border(Austria), surrender a "trittico", and then put on AFI plates which entitled us to tax free gas. My understanding was that this process was irreversible and all vehicles had to remain in the use of US Forces or be disposed of through US military salvage. I had a VW, a Citroen ID19, and a Triumph 650 when I was there. The Triumph was impossible to register legally.
