You can evaluate for the possibility of sludge.... Andy: Here are a couple of simple statements that you can apply in evaluating a newer model Saab. Sludge is NOT inevitable....after putting 280K miles on a 9-5 (NO SLUDGE!!) I am a little biased.
STATEMENT 1: If a used Saab has been driven 12K-15K or MORE miles per year AND!! subject to 5K interval oil and filter changes of full synthetic oil sludge is unlikely.
APPLICATION 1: If the former user drove 20 or more miles each way to work every day and followed good preventive maintenance practices (5K mile oil change interval) then I would not expect to see sludge. The more miles that are not stop and go and on the highway commuting the better off you are sludge-wise.
STATEMENT 2: If a used Saab has been driven 8Kor LESS miles per year AND!! subject to 10K interval oil and filter changes of full synthetic oil sludge is a possibility.
APPLICATION 2.: If a used Saab has been regularly driven 5-10 minutes to work daily and, only given 10K interval oil changes I’d be suspicious…..of sludge.
CONCLUSION: Saab’s driven very little on very short commutes should be treated with suspicion, not a feeling of opportunity over having found a low-mileage car. A Saab driven a good half-hour or more on the highway every day may be the real opportunity.
As always, regular oil and filter changes should be treated as mandatory. For me, only hard-copy proof of this would suffice.
