I think this (using "rabbit ears") only applies if your HDTV has a built in HD tuner. Some HDTVs are only "monitors" which do not have an HD tuner built in. In this case you'd need to connect an HD tuner to one of the inputs on the HDTV in order to receive OTA (over the air) HD signals.
I have a 36" Sony 4:3 Tube HD TV that I bought about 4 years ago. It does great with both SDTV and HDTV. At the time I figured most of my viewing would be 4:3 for some time to come (and my wife wants to "fill the screen") so pillar bars on a 16:9 were not desirable. It's been a great TV and even watching 16:9 HD content is okay. I've included a neat link below for comparing aspect ratios of 16:9 vs 4:3 TVs (e.g., my 36" 4:3 is effectively a 33" 16:9)
