It's all good. Funny that your name should be Kit as my wife Kit is very tuned into color. In that price range will be 3 models.
1. The older 9-3's, 1999-2002 (or 2003 for convertibles) the ones with the hatch. You might get some change back from your $15k for a nice "OG9-3", old generation 9-3. These come in SE's and the high performance stiff riding, manual shift only Viggen.
2. The 9-3SS, 2003 and up. That's the new non hatch bodystyle, but still standard fold down back seats. They started making a SportCombi (SportWagon version) in 2006, but likely out of your price range used, but maybe not. How arbitrary is your $15k price goal? They'll be quite a few of these at lower prices too. These come in 3 trim levels, Linear, Arc and Aero. Linear base model, Arc mid level, Aero sport model with 17" wheels and sport seats.
3. The 9-5, 1999 and up. The ultimate hatch back is the SportWagon version of the 9-5, all the cool people drive SportWagons. Same deal with 9-5s as 9-3SS, Linear base model, Arc mid level, Aero sport model.
9-3's are smaller, the 9-5 is slightly bigger.
The 9-5's have the best overall reliability picture. The OG9-3's were designed/introduced in 1994 (as 900's and they switched names to 9-3 in 1999 for pretty much the same car) and the last years 2001-2002 were quite good, but not as good as the 9-5 line, which was designed/introduced in 1999 when more quality technology was available.
The 9-3SS was brand new in 2003, with new Can-Buss technology that made the 1st year 2003's a little fussy, not mechanically fussy, but glictch/software fussy, since resolved on the subsequent years and in fact the 2003's really aren't all that bad.
The newer designed 9-3SS strong suit is safety, newer safety systems available for the newer designed car.
