I can't think of too many organizations that truly "represent" a particular group of people and which mirror the religious, political, socio-economic, ethnic, and other characteristics of *all* their members.
I don't agree with all that AARP says or does, but on balance it seems largely OK, IMHO. However, it will be interesting to see how or if it changes as more and more "boomers" join up (and as AARP pursues boomers), given that boomers are the most affluent, best educated and most politically active generation in American history.
I'm not a joiner of much of anything, but if my $12.95 helps get me better deals on a variety of things I'd buy anyway, provides a level of political clout on some issues, and doesn't seem to do any harm then I don't have an issue. I'm not idealistic enough to think that just because AARP supports something that it will come to pass or is even a good idea.
And in reality, NOT joining doesn't affect the organization one way or another.
Then again, if they went negative on Saabs, I might have a problem!
