That would only be a major factor if the dollar was worth about 40% of what it was a year ago. fortunately that's not the case. On the other hand, the price per barrel of oil has increased from less than $50 to over $130, and unfortunately most of it is speculative. The multiple that states the increase that gasoline has increased is much closer to the later and not the former. I would that neither had done what they have but there it is.

Of course all the gas-o-hog cars do have impact on the available gasoline (supply and demand? pricing?) and my 19 year old said "even the people that say who cares I can afford it really are being short sighted. Since they use more per capita, it costs more for the rest of us, and then we have to shift personal funds away from something else to afford the gas. And then we stop purchases, perhaps from the Hummer owner's business and that could impact his income and..." I think I smiled for the rest of the day after he said this...

Of course the Big three make (oops, let's make that made...) more profit on the four door trucks that look like a car with an open trunk and got 13-16 mpg. A Saab 9000 or a Volvo Station wagon stack up well against those in every way except towing and snob appeal. I am sure there are other vehicles that do too. The big three are profit motivated and blindly worked that vein until it's about dry. It's a shame to have to say this, but maybe part of the upside will be Saab will be a Star for GM and won't be sold off at a loss as Jag and Land Rover were for Ford.
