I'm thankful cars are still made without ABS. It's probably too expensive a repair liability on a small cheap car. I've had it up to here with ABS problems currently.
I wouldn't worry about it. If it's the car you want, learn to stop quickly and control the car without ABS. It's not hard, you just have to be willing to learn and make a little noise with the tires in the process.
My 91se convertible has had needlessly complex brake problems at various times because of the ABS system. I'm ready to move it to a 1989 braking system. This car's ABS removes all feel from the brake pedal and makes most braking somewhat clumsy.
My 2000 9-5 currently has a bad ABS module. If it were fixed at a dealership, it would probably be $3000. It's probably a bad solder joint I can fix myself or send away to get fixed for <$200.
I've had multiple ABS and non-ABS cars of multiple brands, and it's a handy feature at times, but I'm not sure necessary. I've had Viggen flight academy, and lots of winter driving experience. Saab's ABS does not let you brake faster on snow/ice. It's awesome on dry pavement, but it's not a magic technology.
