Why the disdain for wagons?

What happened to the wagon? It was loved until the minivan and later the SUV, yet in most cases a wagon is supremely more practical and fun to drive. I might have been interested in a G8 wagon, but GM killed the idea because the Magnum doesn’t sell well compared to the Charger. The Magnum is terrible from a load point of view so there is little wagon utilitarianism. The Holden Commodore on which the G8 is based is supposed to have 25% more load capability than a Magnum despite being sorter and lower. The V8 might not be so bad gas wise if using variable cylinder management.
There are so few reasonably priced true wagons on the market in the US and with high gas prices this makes little sense.
Has anyone driven a G8 or Ford Flex? The Flex isn’t a true wagon and in typical Ford fashion is probably underpowered and gas thirsty.
