the gm warranty glossary has:

In-Service Date: The date on which a GM is first placed into service. Generally, this is the date of a customer purchase for vehicles sold as "new." Exceptions may include consumer purchases of dealership "demo" cars and company-owned GM's whose in-service dates will reflect the beginning of dealership or company use.

this appears to refer to the base 48/48000 mi warranty

there are extended warranties that are based on the "contract" dates, but that doesn't seem to apply to the base warranty...

the dealerships play some strange games -- i have a '01 Olds Silhouette with and in-service date of Aug '03 -- received warranty repairs (at Chevrolet dealer) on it thru August '06 based on the base 36/36000 warranty

without the support of the dealership, unlikely SAAB will change the in-service date from what their computer shows..
