It's usually assumed that manuals get better fuel economy than automatics but it's not always true. At highway speeds, manual tranny equipped cars often have their engines rev higher than an automatic. The manual tranny car needs more revs for passing without downshifting because it does not have the benefit of the torque converter to be unlocked for extra torque while staying in the same gear.
I have noticed better FE in the city with my 5spd manual relative to my lower power old 9-3 with automatic. That's because you get no fuel engine braking that doesn't occur in the automatic as often.
I used to work in powertrain engineering so I have an understanding of the principles but I'm not a super-expert. I did address this in part of a post here...
