No roof is that permanent. The best metal roofs can go a few decades without much care, but are expensive--up to 5X the cost of a traditional shingle roof. The top-end asphalt/fiberglass shingle roofs are generally pretty much trouble-free for up to 30 years or so. But it's not the roof materials that you have to think about.
You will have exhaust pipes for your heating system, plumbing vents, maybe exhaust fans/attic vents, and maybe a chimney. These are all holes in the roof and what causes problems is the joint between these items and the roof. Some gasket or seal or caulking fails and you get a leak. Not necessarily a big deal, but it happens. In the mild climate of Seattle you don't have the temperature and weather extremes of other northern states (which are harder on a roof), so it's maybe less likely that it is where I am in New England, but you just have to be aware that this stuff is a maintenance issue over time.
What is common where you want to build? Talk to builders, building supply places, etc.
