If it's true that you have a clean license, the officer will probably offer you a plea. He will have to be there in attendance at your court date, and will have checked your driving record by then. I believe its true that you will have to go to court in the town or village where you received the ticket (whatever part of the Pike that may be). You should plead not guilty, sign the ticket and return it. They will then send you correspondence of when and where your court date will be. The officer or perhaps a court officer will meet you beforehand if they plan to offer a plea. Basically, at that point keep your mouth shut and see what they offer. It's usually something like parking on the pavement. That will give you no points, but the local municipality will get their $150. If they don't offer you a plea that involves no points, then you can speak up about your clean driving record and the desire to keep it that way. You can explain at that point about the passing if you wish. But, the law states that you cannot break the speed limit even when passing slower vehicles. Don't be surprised if that is the troopers response. It's best to just be cordial and polite and explain that it was just a stupid mistake that you normally wouldn't make.
I've had two speeding tickets reduced to parking on pavement and I had another dismissed without a fine because the trooper didn't make it to court and I had driven over an hour to be there. It's always worth pleading not guilty. The biggest reason they write tickets is not so stop speeders, but to pad the local coffers. If on the other hand you are a habitual speeder, don't expect a break. They do want to make it hard on them.
Good luck!
