With Christmas coming up I thought some folks might like to know there's a capable espresso machine out there right now that won't break the bank. I bought my Quick Mill Quick Espresso Plus (model # 0930) about 11 months ago & still love its convenience, the drinks it brews up & its food-safe construction. Its main drawback (if you want to call it that) is that its exterior is neither stainless steel nor black plastic, the two most popular finishes for kitchen counter appliances.
AFAIK, Vaneli's still has these $502 espresso machines for $199.
You'll also need an espresso-capable grinder. Right now the Cunill El Cafe Tranquilo grinder can be bought for $235 (SovranaStore.com), making it the best buy of the current market.
I'm attaching the review I posted over on CoffeeGeek, but let me know if I can answer any questions not addressed over there.
