I don't know your background, but reading another post, you seem to be involved in a residency....If so, and if not, you should know that a resident in training makes a salary, which is dictated more or less by the region that they work in....a little more here and a little less there, but generally goes from 40-50K/year for the first year. If the "average" work week is (being generous) 60hrs (more like 80 for most programs), the hourly equivalent is 45,000/(60x52) = 14.40/hr....great compensation for someone who has all that training?
Your theory of "live simple" doesn't reflect reality either. People that moonlight are doing so to make ends meet. Try living with 50K/year, paying for a car, rent or mortgage, STUDENT LOANS, and why not, they also have the right to have a FAMILY.
I don't think that residents are "living the life" that you imagine them to be living.
As for attendings, as mentioned in another post, they are "CATCHING UP" with all the things they couldn't while studying. Most attendings join the work force in their early 30s, have no retirement contributions, and probably no assets/equity built up, they still carry a large amount of debt, that until that point they were not even able to start paying.
