To me, (and I'm more convinced of this lately), one of GM's main problems is their public relations. They needed some monumental campaigns that show that their cars are just as good as the competition, the quality is comparable, and the fuel efficiency in most segments is amongst the best. They also need to show that with rebates calculated in, the true resale value is not as low as the magazines make it out to be. Remember the Chrysler versus Mercedes commercials from the 80's? I'm not saying those were good (or true) but GM needed to do something that monumental to drive their points home. (And they should have made the canceled Saturn VUE full hybrid we were working on in 2004 which would have come out before the Escape hybrid). Now people think GM only makes gas guzzlers and that their quality sucks. As a result, people have low willingness to pay for GM products relative to the competition.
