The 3 speed auto tranny of the 900C was garbage....after 1993, autos got a LOT better than what they were, they added one more speed, the sport and winter modes and in general a lot of electronics that made the cars behave much better than with the old ones. Most people will drive automatics, that's what sells!!! and manufacturers will try to make things that sell; they can't please everyone....
Put it this way, if you are in the market for a car and want a manual you may (have to) compromise and get an auto because that's the only thing you can find.....BUT, if you only want an automatic (or don't know how to drive standard) you cannot make that compromise.
With today's technology, auto boxes are getting closer to manual ones, see the DGS of the VW GTI.....anyways, my two cents....
p.s. is not like you can go to any other brand and find tons of standard cars, you will find the same shift towards automatics everywhere...
