It's an XR4Ti... I like the Scorpios too, but they just have too many potential issues. Terrible engines, less than good transmissions, bad electrical systems. When they're running, they're great drivers - good in the handling department and really comfortable. But they sure aren't fast - like, they can't get out of their own way. A few folks have done Explorer 4.0 V6 swaps or put the 2.3l from the XR4Ti in - I think there's a 302-converted one out there somewhere and a couple other interesting swaps. The Scorpio and XR4Ti share a lot of components; at some level, the Scorpio is just a stretched XR4Ti. In the end, largely whatever you can do to one you can do to the other.
But, the XR is a kickass car out of the box, and has enormous potential. It's like an E30 3-series, except less refined, more edgy, and capable of a lot more with a much smaller budget. :) I just finished putting a T-5 from a Thunderbird in mine, which I should have done YEARS ago. Currently it's got ported manifolds (all of them), a 3" exhaust, enormous Mustang radiator, Mustang GT brakes up front, Contour SVT brakes in back, coilovers, deleted AC, and I just added the T-5 with an awesome Ford Motorsports aluminum driveshaft. It's pretty quick at only 8psi of boost. Next up is an intercooler, and then things should really get interesting.
But, uh, the CTS-v is remarkable. I have to tell you, I'm a big fan of "more," but 400hp is a lot. I can honestly say I would not want to drive the '09 models anywhere but on open roads. Small throttle adjustments are huge changes in speed, and with 6.0l it doesn't matter what gear you're in or what the engine RPM is. You are accelerating NOW. More hp and torque than what I've got now would just be insanity for getting around town.
On the upside, it's really a nice contrast to all the turbo lag and off-cam performance (read: Alfas) I've become used to. It'll be fun to see how the XR4Ti ends up comparing as power builds.
