"Is that why SAAB has had alloy/snow tire packages for sale for over 15years ?"
This only took place after GM ownership due to their interest in passing on higher priced wheels and reducing substantial inventory in alloy wheel packages from accessories, etc. and passing them onto reluctant customers as "snow tire wheels".
Case in point, these wheels were in absolute abundance at the last 2 Saab Owners Conventions, the wheels almost outnumbered the convention attendees.
Alloy wheels were never originally intended to be winter wheels, and Sweden's the last place that Saab really focuses on Steel wheels with nice hubcaps (not surprisingly not available in the U.S. Market).
If Saab Sweden still suggests steel wheels with hub caps in their market, I'm listening to them, not what GM North American pushes on is in another attempt to take as much $$ from us as they can. We don't need $200 a piece snow tire wheels, that's insane...but now as you have said after 15 years people start thinking this is "normal" to use alloys.
I guess us American's are getting used to getting robbed blind by corporate america, at least Saab Sweden still offers what we need instead of pushing the excess on the customers.
Here is the proof from Saab Sweden's #1 dealer -
