rather than fear it--make it their new business model. They could build a very high quality, durable chassis, but design it so the components are modular. After say 10 years and 150K you could go to the dealer and get a new power train module installed--engine, trans, axles, struts, accesseries, throw in a new exhaust and fuel pump and you'd have a "new" car. They could do the same with the interior and body work. Instead of selling you a whole new car every few years they could sell the various modules instead. You could finance it just like you would a car. Considering how little the "big 3" make on a car, they'd probably make more money selling the modules since they'd be the only one who sells them--they'd have a captive audience. It'd also give the customer the ability to upgrade their car--they could get a V6 to replace a 4 cylinder, get leather to replace cloth etc. They could even offer updated front and rear "caps" to change the way the car looks. The old stuff could be sent back to the factory to be re-manufactured and sold again. It'd be very "green", you could get 25 or 30 years out of a car, they'd have great resale value--it would be good for all concerned.
