I had an '86 900T for 15 years, and got rid of it 3 years ago (rust, plus time for trannie work and some other problems). I had the choice between a 2001 9-3 and an absolutely pristine 1986 900T. I went with the 9-3 because I drive to/from New York City a couple of times a year and have some other road trips and I figured a newer car would be more reliable for that. I've regretted my decision since.

The 9-3 has been reliable (aside from an a/c compressor clutch that seized), but it's not like the C900. The 9-3 just doesn't have the character or the thoughtful design of the C900. It does have a nicer ride, especially over bumps, but it doesn't handle as well. The seats are comparable, but I think the C900 seats were a bit more comfy and supportive.

The C900 is definitely easier to work on, but I think the 9-3 will probably need less work over time.

The stupid "engineering" design elements of the 9-3 really bug me and make me appreciate the thought that was put into the C900. The 9-3 seat doesn't fold flat (it's up at about a 30-40 degree angle), and there's a big beam across the floor. Fuses and relays are all over the place instead of in one box under the hood. And some genius decided to use brown plastic on the oil dipstick that's the same color as new oil, so it's pretty difficult to see how much oil I have. (ok, all that was a bit of a rant, I admit).

Bottom line, the 9-3 will probably be more reliable, a bit more comfortable, and a bit more upscale in feel than the 900, but the 900 is the nicer car.
