It's cute to say that air is 78% nitrogen, so why bother, but as I understand it, the issue is moisture. Most of the gains of running nitrogen (ie minimizing pressure changes due to temperature) could be acheived with perfectly dry air, but for whatever reason it's easier to just get nitrogen than dry air. Humid air changes volume due to temperature more than dry air.
I know they're not very popular around here, but Consumer Reports published data on a nitrogen experiment and over a year, tires filled with nitrogen lost less pressure than those with air, losing 2.2 psi, compared with 3.5 for air.
My tire guy uses it, and the man LOVES tires, so I trust his judgement, but I doubt there's much of a diference for most if any folks.
