OT: Solid wood furniture advice

My fiancee and I recently started looking for some furniture. We each have absolutely nothing, so we will basically be starting from scratch once married. We went around yesterday just looking at stuff to get an idea if we agree on style, and to see what kind of stuff is out there and what it costs, etc...
Is it me, or has quality taken a nosedive? I get the impression that it's just like everything else - Americans want cheap things that look nice, but aren't as concerned with quality as they used to be - couple that with the natural forces of competition and and you get a lot of stuff made outside the US. Even the US stuff is going downhill. I would rather have a simple piece of furniture that is all solid wood and constructed well (thick drawers, proper dovetails, etc) over an ornate piece with exotic wood veneers. A lot of the furniture in my folks' home is old (not OLD, but maybe 20-30 years) - it's very simple, but very sturdy. A lot of it is pine, which I don't think is an expensive wood - but it's solid through and through - no wood veneers and no particle board junk. Does stuff like this still exist? Of the few stores we stopped by, I would say Ethan Allen seemed to have the nicest stuff (so far). But, it's obviously fairly expensive, and the quality seems to have dropped off a bit compared to EA pieces I've seen from a decade or so ago. Just doesn't have that robust feel. Is the custom built furniture route realistic, or is that just super expensvive? Obviously, if we went with top quality stuff for every item, especially when working from scratch, we'd be bankrupt pretty fast. But, I'd like to get at the very least a nice well-made bedroom set, and dining room table. Other odds and ends we can fill in by scouring though IKEA for their rare solid wood pieces and then replace them over the years as we are financially able to.
I figured the SAAB demographic would really have some interesting opinions regarding quality wood furniture. Thanks for any advice!!!
