Yes, GM has legacy costs, but that is not the reason they are failing. German manufacturers have high costs as well. Also, GM should have been saving money for legacy costs in times of plenty. This is all reflective of crummy planning and management. Whatever GM makes now or in the future is too little, too late.
76.2% of sales in the U.S. were not a GM product in 2007 and I’d bed more than half of those never will be GM again. (Globally, over 85% of sales were a non-GM product.) Also, these numbers are inflated by the GM cash burn which was partially used subsidizing vehicle prices and fleet sales. That doesn’t mean the competition is necessarily better, but at least the public perception of them is better. GM hasn’t treated me correctly so why should I assume that don’t treat everyone poorly. GM long ago forgot the customer is always right. I don’t see the wonderful product GM is touting. Maybe it is better, but far from wonderful, too late, and most importantly still made by GM, an entity that doesn’t value customers. Let GM die or the bankruptcy judge restructure it.
2007 Market Share (source: http://www.autoobserver.com/2008/01/2007-a-historic-year-for-us-vehicle-sales.html):
Chrysler 12.9%
Ford 15.5%
GM 23.8%
Honda 9.6%
Nissan 6.6%
Toyota 16.3%
