Your statement that "they should raise their prices or just go away" is something I might expect to come from Washington...truly misinformed and totally unrealistic.
Take farmers and ranchers, for example. We have over 10,000 head of dairy cows and 300 square miles of farmland. How do you propose we check our irrigation sprinklers, take cattle to auction, and do just about everything we do all day every single day with an econo-car? I tried it in my Saab 900 for awhile...for my sake and the car's sake, never ever again. Then again, I guess we could just call it quits and let the grocery store shelves sit empty. Or we could raise prices. Unfortunately, farmers, dairymen, and ranchers don't name their price...they get whatever the market is offering at the time. And I'm sure you'd love for farmers to pass along their fuel tax to you, the consumer. Wow, this could go on forever...
What about utility maintenance, repairmen, and installation people? I'm sure you'd absolutely love a price increase because of a fuel tax.
Ever pay anything for delivery? I would have a hard time believing that everyone driving a cargo van of some sort would gladly pay a fuel tax because somebody thought they were doing too much business and driving too much.
A fuel tax is unrealistic, unfair, and not feasible in any way. I'm not only talking about "heavy duty vehicles" that you mentioned...I'm talking about anything and everything that is used to do anything more than an econo-car can. I don't mean to be argumentative, but I do hope that there is another side to this story that isn't being understood as it should be. I can see your point and I hope you can see mine. Drive safely and KEEP ON SAABING!!!
