Saab is hardly alone. It's better business to move the iron for a thin margin than to pay floor plan costs on it. And there may be some giveback deals from GM to move the cars while GM tries to shed Saab.
Then again, not all cars are being heavily discounted. A colleague has a Suburban as the family car (four kids, lots of car pools). He goes to do a trade thinking something a little smaller with better gas mileage. But they won't give him much for the Suburban. So can he get a new Suburban for a great price? Nope, north of $50K is the best he can get. The dealer isn't discounting them at all.
Same guy is almost at lease-end on his 6-series Bimmer (company car). He figured going to a new 135 would save money. Nope. They want $700+ a month for a 135 (no cash down).
Maybe the dealers figure that since they serve a ritzy suburb they can do this, but he's looking at it and says the dealers need a reality check.
