1. I just googled HTPC vs. PS3 in regards of quality. There are tons of opinions but the consensus is the HTPC has the edge with the latest hardware (not necessarily expensive hardware). Which is not suprising giving that PS3 is about 2 years old now. There is no digital-to-analog coversion in the player with HDMI hookup - so it is just the matter of the algorithm implemented. And there are many chipsets that are primarily designed with BD decoding in mind. Anyway it is very subjective, and, in regards to HTPC, evolving comparison. As far as SD upconverting there were many complaints about PS3 - at least with the initial 2007 firmware. Although it has become better afterwards.
2. Why would I want to rip BDs? In my case I rent BDs from Netflix but do not always have the time to watch them right away. Some people may want to keep backup copies in case the disc would scratch (especially kids BDs). Another benefit is to have the whole collection on HDD and not bother swapping the discs.
3. Having the router in the next room is considered close by american standards. Mine is 3 rooms over and the signal has to cross a few walls at a very oblique angle (which effectively makes the wall so much thicker). I had plenty of issues and ended up just running a wire. Anyway this has nothing to do with HTPC vs PS3 as either is capabale of using both wired and wireless hookup. Also, HD content that you download has typically order of magnitude lower bitrate than true BD - usually at the expense of quality as it uses the same codec.
4. Netflix may not exist in Europe, and iTunes is unimportant for now. However, IPTV is rapidly growing industry and may become important in the future. With HTPC you have the most compatible solution for anything that may come along. Another advantage you can easily upgrade it to DVR by purchasing an additional card.
Anyway, one can easily google "htpc vs ps3" and find all the opinions there. I think we covered the topic enough for the Saab board.
