rust repair Posted by DE [Email] (#2598) [Profile/Gallery] (more from DE) on Tue, 14 Apr 2009 13:27:48 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
OK I have an '01 9-5 wagon with 94k miles and I think there's a good chance it will run quite a while longer, and I have no need for a different car so I'd like to keep it as long as practical. It has some rust on the tailgate door(from a scratch which I neglected, and at the bottom of the door), and on the bottom of the back seat door opening. It's not close to rusting through, but looks ugly on the rear door. I'd like to get it fixed, and don't mind paying a reasonable amount.
I took it to a local body shop (which I believe to be good) awhile ago, and they didn't really want to work on it. Said the rust would come back, they couldn't guarantee it, they'd recommend just waiting until it rusted through and then repairing it. They said if I wanted to keep the car awhile, maybe get a salvaged rear door and replace.
At this point I'm tired of looking at it, so I'm thinking of taking it somewhere else for another opinion, or maybe taking back to the first place and asking them to look into a salvage door.
I know it's hard to say too much without looking at the rust, but I'd be interested in any general thoughts on how to approach this. Also any recommendation for bodyshops in the Portland, Maine area (I took it to Hewitt's in Yarmouth, which has done good work for me in the past). TIA.
