Here is my process for flushing the cooling system... When I flush the cooling system, for example to change coolant types or the get rid of an unknown coolant; here are my steps:
1) I drain the cooling system (typically by removing the bottom radiator hose.
2) Refill the cooling system with distilled water (could use tap water but distilled water has no minerals so will have no possible chemical reaction/particulates).
3) Run the engine until the thermostat opens (engine reaches normal operating temperature).
4) Let engine cool, then drain and refill with distilled water again.
5) Run the engine until the thermostat opens (engine reaches normal operating temperature).
6) Let engine cool, then drain and refill with one half the system volume in pure coolant and top off with distilled water Remember that there will always be an unknown amount of water trapped in the system. If the cooling system holds 10 quarts, after draining the system, add 5 quarts of pure coolant and top off with distilled water.
7) Run the engine until the thermostat opens to remove any air trapped in the system and let engine cool, top off if needed with distilled water.
A long process, but I am sure that the system was cleared of the old coolant and that the new coolant is the right mixture strength.
