Pumps are simple, pump selection is not... Every pump has a Pump Curve which is the graphical plot of its ability to move water versus the resistance to flow it encounters, GPM verus Head. Superimposed on these graphs will be efficiency curves showing the efficiency percentage of the pump at every flow-pressure combination along its curve. Your standard pump will alwys operate at some point along the curve, the resistance to flow determines where this point will be.
If your pump never sees an appreciable change in flow resistance, neglect the filter getting dirty, buying a variable flow/variable speed pump will likely be a waste of your money.
If your pump regularly sees appreciable changes in flow resistance; flow thru heater or around heater, On/Off flow to hot tub jets, On/Off flow to a slide or other deck side device, On/Off flow to an automatic cleaner, etc., then it might make sense to install one of these higher cost pumps.
In theory these controls will generate a broad range of possible pump curves. You have to assume the pump designers designed the mechanical and electrical components of the pumps to maintain maximum efficiency with the flow changes like to be encountered by a home pool.
