Hello, NYSOC is putting on a big east coast drive that starts on June 27 and runs until July 2.

We understand that you may not be interested in driving the whole event but we welcome people to meet up with us for a day or part of a day and join the drive/events.

Info from Rob Riccardelli:

There can be no mistake. This is a MASSIVE DRIVE for no good reason. If you like driving a lot, then we would like to have you join us. This event will consume at least 6 days of your precious life. Each day is between 4 and 6 hours of driving time. On most days, there are interesting stops planned along the route (many of them involving beer). On the days that there will be limited planned stops, the most scenic route has been selected to fill your day with driving bliss. Be warned, however, that this drive contains a fair amount of interstate in an effort to move things along.

You will be responsible for your lodging, food, fuel, and entertainment costs on this trip. As it's possible you will need a hotel room for 6 nights, the selected hotels are generally low-cost to keep expenses in-check. Indeed, there are some Motel 6 and Super 8 properties selected as the "official lodging" for the night. Of course, you may feel free to deviate from the group and find more deluxe accommodations or maybe even a campsite. Naturally, room sharing is encouraged.

This event is tentatively scheduled to begin on Saturday morning, June 27th. The daily schedule of events is rough and may be tough to adhere to depending on traffic and/or how quickly we get on the road in the morning and between stops. We cannot guarantee that every attraction will be visited. However, many attractions are likely to be added as we move along.

This drive is hosted by NYSOC, but there is no rule that you must be a member or drive a Saab. In fact, early interest indicates that there may actually be nobody driving a Saab on this event. The projected group size is 6 vehicles based on early interest estimates. This page will be updated with more information as it becomes available.

If you are interested in attending, either for the whole event or just part, please email me at robricc AT nysoc.com.

Day 1 (June 27th) - New Jersey, Delaware, Maryland (221 miles)

Start in Eatontown, NJ. If you need a hotel room the night before, I can recommend the Ocean Place in Long Branch. We will be driving down the NJ coast to the southernmost point of the state, Cape May. From there, we will hop on the Cape May-Lewes ferry (we will arrange reservations at a later date closer to the event). This is a car-carrying ferry and the trip takes about an hour. When we land in Lewes, DE, we're practically on doorstep of Dogfish Head Brewery. I believe a tour will be in order. From there, we will make our way toward Annapolis, MD and the Super 8. A trip to the USNA and Annapolis for dinner is possible if time allows.

Day 2 (June 28th) - Maryland, Pennsylvania, West Virginia, Ohio (307 miles)
Wake up in Annapolis, MD and embark on our longest day of driving. We will be on a wild romp through scenic roads of MD, PA, and WV. Our lovely hotel for the night will be the Days Inn, St. Clairsville, OH. Yes, Ohio.

Day 3 (June 29th) - Ohio, West Virginia, Pennsylvania, New York, Ontario (331 miles)
Near our hotel in Ohio is the site of the abandoned West Virginia Penitentiary. Since tours don't start until 11:00AM, we'll be able to sleep in later and maybe get a proper breakfast. We'll take the 90 minute tour and then head off towards the Canadian side of Niagara Falls for the night. There, we will do all kinds of touristy things. The drive today is a mix of interstate and local highways along Lake Erie.We will cross into canada via the Peace Bridge. You must have a passport or enhanced drivers license to cross into Canada by car. The selected hotel is a Motel 6. It is within walking distance to the falls and Clifton Hill and is quite inexpensive.

Day 4 (June 30th) - Ontario, New York (296 miles)
After waking up in Niagara Falls, we will sight-see a bit in daylight. We then head back over the border for a stop at Saranac Brewery for a tour. Not too long after Saranac, we will hit the Brewery Ommegang tour in Cooperstown, NY. Cooperstown is the home of the Baseball Hall of Fame, so there are plenty of things to do and places to eat after our beer-filled day. The hotel for the night (Super 8) is a bit further from Cooperstown in Cobleskill, NY. Hotels in Cooperstown are just too pricey this time of year, it seems.

Day 5 (July 1st) - New York, Vermont (228 miles)
This is one of lightest days of motoring. We'll go on a scenic drive through upstate NY toward the Burlington area of Vermont. The only planned stop for the day is Ben & Jerry's. We'll have plenty of opportunity to check out the local shops and restaurants around Burlington after the factory tour. Hotel for the night is the Days Inn in Barre, VT

Day 6 (July 2nd) - Vermont, Massachusetts, Connecticut (284 miles)
In the morning , we will ride on over to the Rock of Ages if they're running tours that day . Then, get ready for a ride along Vermont Route 100. Along the way, we will stop at Long Trail Brewing for some lunch and brew. Our final stop on the driving tour will be in New Haven, CT at Louis' Lunch, apparent birthplace of the hamburger. From New Haven, we will all split and go our separate ways, or maybe discuss extending the tour a bit into the next day. NYC is about an hour and a half from New Haven by car, and there is also a commuter train line that goes right in (for those hitching a ride).
