Hopefully this isn't true.
In addition to what everyone else has said about the potential ramifications on quality, also think about the corporate culture/philosophy clash.
Volvo's tagline is "For Life". Volvo was big on safety long before safety "sold" (like SAAB). In other words, Volvo has been known for putting safety into their cars because they actually care about human lives. Now, I don't know much about Geely in particular, so these may be "stereotypical" statements...but Chinese companies tend to do anything to save money, even if includes knowingly endangering the safety of people. I get the impression that they feel that lives are "cheap". American and European corporations are certainly guilty of this at times, but it doesn't appear to be anywhere near as widespread as it is with Chinese firms. Here I was thinking I'd be mourning the end of SAAB as we know it, and it appears as if it may be Volvo instead. Even if they still make great cars...many people probably couldn't make such a major purchase knowing the money was going to a Communist nation with blatant human rights violations. Small purchases like a pen, buying from China may be unavoidable, so we do it. But, cars are different.
