The key thing is to buy good quality tools. If you've spent a lot of time turning wrenches you realize it's some of the subtle stuff that makes a difference.
For example, Craftsman has a raised section on their box/open end wrenches that says "Craftsman." On other brands the brand name is simply stamped or cast into the tool. The difference is the raised portion makes the Craftsman a bit less comfortable to use, especially if you have to exert a lot of pressure on the tool. Many people say the sockets and wrenches from Snap-on and other pro tools fit better on nuts and bolts.
Having good tools is important because it helps you do a better job or work more easily. The cost of the better stuff is definitely an issue, but I find the good stuff is just more reliable and really helps do the job. I have a lot of Craftsman in my tool boxes but have lost stuff over the years and as I replace stuff I'm inclined to go the better grade.
But it does depend on how much you use them. If you are a casual hobby mechanic working on one car, Craftsman is fine. If you are more serious and working on multiple cars more often, then the good stuff is worthwhile.
