I can see draining the gas, which goes bad, but not the oil. I would think that leaving some oil in the engine, even dirty oil, is better than none.
My current mower is about 11 years old, a generic Home Depot brand with a Briggs & Stratton engine. I rarely do any maintenance on it, other than when it started running very rich and I bought a carburator/diaphragm kit for $5 on the hunch that it would fix it - it worked. If I remember to change the 16 ounces oil in the spring it's pure luck. What failed on yours?
Meanwhile, my brother grabbed the old Toro mower that I used 30+ years ago from my parent's house - it's still working.
