It is UV protected, and yes, it acts as a shield for the lenses to keep them from getting pitted & abraded again. That was rather the point of applying it. I bought it from a 3M dealer... I actually didn't buy it, I guess, I traded computer work for it.

I had originally planned on using 8672 instead of 8674 - they are similar products. I don't actually remember why I ended up using the 8674 instead - it may have been the enhanced UV stability. It still looks great, and the car sits outside 365x24x7. I originally applied it March of 08.
I still have an enormous amount of both - I just haven't gotten around to applying to to other cars yet... the glass lights on everything else weren't nearly as problematic as the plastic lenses on the XR4Ti.
Both can be purchased from many aircraft supply dealers... like I said, they use this stuff for canopy and leading edge protection.
